We - Chain Singh and myself- participated in a parent teacher meeting at our Primary school on 10th July 2021. This being the tomato season, some parents were busy and not able to attend. Issues discussed were:
1. Should the children be retained in the same class, since whole of last year has been disrupted due to Covid shut down? Most parents agreed but unfortunately Block Education Officer has earlier recommended, the established government policy: every child must be graduated to the next class, no matter what! We hope to let parents have the last word on this issue.
2. Some parents wanted to have a different uniform. A little more colourful, we guess. Since, not all parents may be able to buy new ones at the same time, we decided to let it happen for all children together, whenever (hopefully soon) SMTA is in a position to buy new uniform for all the students, through some donation etc.
3. We decided to have an assistant teacher to help with class one and two, whose salary will be subsidised by a small increase in the school fee, about Rs 50 per month per child. This is needed since we have forty + children now. Many local families, which returned from the cities due to Covid in the last one year, have stayed back. As a result they had to get their children admitted in the local schools.
After some discussion about the ups and downs of the agriculture, weather and covid - and some refreshment, the meeting dispersed.
