Comm WS V2 at Chakrata
Dnyanesh and Sachin were the two participants for this 3 day meditation workshop at Jakhadhar. It started a day late: 18,19, 20 May. Dnyanesh arrived from Goa safely and next day we went to Jakhadhar, 70 km away in the mountains.
Initially both of us struggled a bit: I had lot of other pending work weighing on my mind- and Dnyanesh was probably wondering- why does he need to sit quiet from morning to evening? What connection could it have to stammering? By day two, we both were more in the rhythm of the silence of the place. We went for a little walk morning and evening. Dnyanesh cooked maggi one day! Rest of the time, we were fed sumptuously by the resident teacher and his kind family.
In between we discussed some deep questions about communication and meditation. Here are a few clips in no particular order.

Tell me a story!
We shared some good Hindi story books with children today. We had a round of reading and explaining. We taught them how to focus on the narrative and search for the "moral" of the story - and finally how to communicate it to other children. We all had lot of fun. These were class 4 and 5 students. The books were issued to them for five days. Dnyanesh, a visitor from Goa, also read a story to the children.
Parent Teacher Meeting
1. Some parents some time send the child off to graze animals in the forest. So, either the child misses the whole day OR arrives late. It was emphasized that even one day break can set the child back in the class.
2. Parents were told to provide shoes and socks for the children regularly. SMTA will provide only the uniform (thanks to Smile Foundation support).
3. Parents were explained basics of Positive Psychology- and why a child must be given (well deserved) praise now and then.
4. Re. Homework: Parents expect school to give lot of homework to their children! Pros and cons were discussed as well as the High Court prohibition of home work in lower classes. Instead, we suggested that parents should ask the child regularly about whatever happened in the school every day; If the child says, he was shown a movie, then they should ask him to share the story. This will develop "recall (memory)" and language skills of the child.
5. Parents were told about the Mid day meal program (thanks to Medica Hospitals, Kolkata)- and their role in it. They can, whenever possible, provide local produce to enrich the meals- potato, fresh peas etc. It will be much welcomed.
